Talk Abstract
Environmental exposures are a major risk factor for developing colorectal cancer, and the gut microbiome may serve as an integrator of such environmental risk. Recent research has increasingly highlighted its significant impact on the development and progression of colorectal adenomas, which are precursors to colorectal cancer. This talk will explore the intricate relationship between the gut microbiome and varying subtypes of colorectal adenomas, characterizing the microbiome composition and predicted functions associated with varying colonic adenoma presence and subtype. Using a computational approach via mediation analysis, the talk will discuss how microbes transmit protective or carcinogenic effects of diet and medications towards early carcinogenesis. My research has potential for microbiome-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. My findings suggest that the unique dependencies of each colonic adenoma subtype may be exploited therapeutically or through dietary intervention.
