Biosketch
Dr Baldwin Yeung is a consultant general and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) surgeon currently working as the deputy head of department of surgery and the head of UGI and bariatric surgery service at Sengkang General Hospital (SKH). He holds the following academic positions: clinical assistant professor of Duke-NUS medical school, clinical senior lecturer of NUS-YLL medical school and clinical lecturer of NTU-LKC medical school. He is a National Fellow of the World Obesity Federation.
He graduated from the University of Glasgow with BSc(Hons) in 2004 and MBChB(Hons) in 2006. He underwent surgical training in the West of Scotland, UK and obtained his FRCS(Edinburgh) in 2015. To further his subspecialist experience, he undertook a one-year fellowship in laparoscopic UGI surgery and advanced endoscopy at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong; and a one-year fellowship in UGI cancer surgery and bariatric surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In addition, he has undertaken short fellowships with Dr Hobson (Functional Gut Clinic, London), Prof Zhou Ping Hong (Zhong Shan Hospital, Shanghai, China), Dr Dilleman (AZ Sint Jan Hospital, Bruges, Belgium) and Prof Silvana Perretta (IHU Strasbourg, France) to refine his skills in foregut functional studies, advanced endoscopy, bariatric surgery, and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty respectively.
He routinely performs laparoscopic bariatric surgery, emergency biliary surgery including laparoscopic bile duct exploration, benign UGI surgery such as laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, hernia surgery and foregut cancer resection surgery (minimally invasive esophagectomy and gastrectomy). He performs ERCP, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), intragastric balloon insertion, colonoscopy, gastroscopy and therapeutic endoscopy (including endoscopic laser therapy and stenting for UGI cancer palliation). He routinely performs acute care surgery.
His main field of subspecialist interest is foregut cancer surgery, functional foregut surgery, bariatric surgery, endobariatrics (endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and intra-gastric balloon insertion), advanced endoscopy and ERCP.
Research, Education & TrainingHe has published in peer reviewed journals and presented in international conferences. His PhD thesis was on the development of a flexible endoscopic multitasking platform for performing gastrointestinal endoluminal surgery.
He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Robotic Surgery and also serves as a reviewer for various medical journals and the Central Commissioning Facility, National Institute of Health Research, UK.
He enjoys teaching and actively participates in the assessment of medical students from all three medical schools in Singapore. He is also responsible for training and mentoring UGI and general surgeons.
ManagementAs the head of UGI and bariatric surgery service of SKH and the director of Sengkang Weight Improvement Therapy and Complete Health (SWITCH) program, he has improved the efficiency of SKH’s weight management program by implementing a one stop service combing allied health professional clinic and multidisciplinary meeting. He implemented the use of electronic dashboard to track the clinical and metabolic outcomes of all patients going through our weight management program. As a result, the bariatric surgical volume at SKH has risen year on year. He is one of the pioneers of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty in Singapore.
