Dr. Wang is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Genomic Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she leads the Computational Biology Laboratory. She has significant expertise in computational biology, cancer genomics, immunobiology, and immuno-informatics. Her group specializes in deep profiling of the dynamic tumor ecosystems, focusing on cellular and molecular heterogeneity, phenotypic plasticity, dynamics, and interactions between cancer cells and the complex tumor microenvironment (TME) over space and time during tumor initiation, progression, response, and resistance to therapy. They leverage cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multi-omics technologies, along with ultra-high-plex cellular and molecular imaging, and the development and innovative use of state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools for precision and predictive oncology.
Dr. Wang has a distinguished record of research productivity, having authored >110 publications, including >40 articles published as first, senior, or co-senior author in top-tier journals including Nature (n=3), Nature Medicine (n=3), Nature Biotechnology, Cancer Discovery (n=3), Cancer Cell (n=2), Lancet Oncology, Nature Genetics, among others. Her group built the most comprehensive pan-cancer atlases for tumor-infiltrating T cells (Nature Medicine, 2023) and B & plasma cells (Cancer Discovery, 2022). Her group is also recognized by their influential work in characterizing the evolution of cancer cells and the TME in early-stage lung cancer (Cancer Discovery, 2021, 2022; Nature 2024), gastric cancer (Nature Medicine 2021; Cancer Cell, 2023; Gut 2019, 2020), and during the development of immunotherapy response and resistance (Nature 2020; Nature Medicine 2020; Nature communications, n=5; Science Translational Medicine 2020).
Dr. Wang serves as PI or MPI of multiple research grants from NIH/NCI and CPRIT. She also has extensive experience in leading team data science. Currently, Dr. Wang is the site Lead of Data Science for two research programs supported by Break Through Cancer (BTC), co-Lead of the BTC Data Science Hub nationwide, and Lead of the Data Analysis and Data Visualization Unit for an NCI U24 Center. Additionally, she also co-leads the high-risk multiple myeloma Moon Shot Program and the Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Core for MD Anderson GI SPORE Program.
As recognized in her field, Dr. Wang has served on multiple NIH/NCI grant review panels and as a Session Chair/Co-Chair at major conferences such as the AACR and SITC Annual Meetings. She is a Scientific Editor for Cancer Discovery and a member of the James P. Allison Institute Advisory Council. She has been honored with numerous awards, including the Emil Frei, III Award for Excellence in Translational Research, the David M. Livingston Collaboration Award, and the prestigious Sabin Fellow Award. Additionally, she has been invited to write review articles, editorials, commentaries, and perspectives for high-impact journals. She actively collaborates with experts both nationally and internationally, harnessing data science in the fight against cancer. Groundbreaking studies from her lab have revolutionized our understanding of tumor cell heterogeneity, evolution, and immune microenvironment interactions.
