Biosketch

Dr. Mitsuru Kaise is concurrently a specially appointed professor of department of gastroenterology, Nippon medical school, Tokyo, Japan. He is a distinguished honorary member of Japan Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Society as well as the Japanese Gastroenterological Association, known for his extensive contributions to the field of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

He began his academic journey by graduating from Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Japan, in 1981. He began his medical career as a resident of internal medicine. Seeking broader horizons, he ventured to the United States, where he worked as a research fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Tadataka Yamada (100th AGA meeting president) at the University of Michigan Medical School, USA, from 1992 to 1995. His main research topic was the molecular mechanisms of gastric acid secretion.

Upon his return to Japan, his dedication and expertise led him to an academic appointment at Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo, where he served as Associate Professor in the Department of Endoscopy. He accepted the prestigious position of Director of the Gastroenterology Department at Toranomon Hospital, an ultra-high-volume endoscopy center. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field, he was appointed professor of the department of gastroenterology at Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, in 2017.

For many years, he has conducted basic and clinical research on endoscopic diagnosis and endoscopic treatment of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers. In the field of endoscopic diagnosis of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers, we are investigating image-enhanced endoscopy, including NBI/AFI/TXI and ultra-magnification endoscopy, and have recently been involved in clinical research on AI endoscopy.
