Biosketch

Dr. Takeshi Sano graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1980. He spent 15 months researching carcinogenesis at the Curie Institute in Paris under a French Government scholarship. During his 15 years at the National Cancer Center Hospital and subsequent 10 years at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Dr. Sano performed over 2,000 gastrectomies and trained numerous surgeons who now practice at leading hospitals worldwide. Dr. Sano served as a council member of the Japanese Gastric Cancer Association and as the Secretary General for the International Gastric Cancer Association. He contributed significantly to the launch of the journal “Gastric Cancer” and to the publication of treatment guidelines and TNM classifications. As a steering committee member of the Japan Clinical Oncology Group, he played a central role in clinical trials for gastric cancer surgery. Dr. Sano delivered invited lectures in 117 cities across 44 countries and conducted live gastrectomy demonstrations in 19 hospitals globally.
